Agelong Tree :: Questions & Answers

Q: I've always wanted to make my family tree. Could you suggest what I should do first?

A: First you should speak to your relatives, put down their reminiscences, facts of their lives and the lives of their ancestors. You will probably find old photos and someone may be able to explain whose photos they are. You can try to find your relatives on the Internet. And then use Agelong Tree to put together all the obtained information, systematize it and build family trees.

Q: I'd like to show the tree to my relatives, they live in another city. How can I do it?

A: The simplest way is creating a tree, saving it in a graphic format and e-mailing it. There is a better solution: your relatives can install Agelong Tree on the computer, an unregistered copy of the program works for an unlimited time, but if the database has more than 40 persons the program works in "read-only" mode, so you cannot modify data. You can save data to an archive (the Save to archive.. item of the File menu) and send the archive to your relatives. They will restore the data (the Restore from archive.. item of the File menu) and will be able to view them, create and print trees, etc.

Q: Should I install the new version of the software over the old one?

A: Right. You don't need to uninstall the old version.

Q: Can I let, for instance, my daughter add something to some part of the tree and then update the old one?

A: Yes, you can. You can save data to an archive (the Save to archive.. item of the File menu), send the archive to your daughter and restore date from the archive on her computer (the Restore from archive.. item of the File menu). If you need it, you can return the enlarged database to your computer by performing the described actions in the reverse order.

Q: My tree already contains more than 500 persons, and I am afraid to lose data as a result of a failure. What can I do?

A: It is recommended that you should regularly save data to an archive (see the File menu) and save the file to some secure location (like a CD or DVD). You will be able to restore data from the archive in case of a failure.

Q: What size should the person's photos have?

A: 300 x 400 pixels are sufficient in most cases.

Q: Is it possible to view all my relatives together in one tree?

A: No, generally you cannot create a large tree. The current version of the program allows displaying all blood relatives of a person (everyone who has the same blood with this person) and their spouses in one tree. To see the spouses' relatives you should create their trees. In following versions of Agelong Tree we plan to introduce a feature of displaying all relatives in one tree.

Q: What new features are you planning for following versions?

A: Creating a tree of all relatives. Synchronizing, splitting and merging databases. Creating a site (a set of linked html pages) containing trees, description of persons, photos and links.
